Water Lettuce on Lake Onalaska: Sunday Date: 10/18/2015 09:39 PM From: Fritz To: Participating Natural Resource Agencies and Volunteers I found 2 more plants, same as Saturday, one on the exposed outer shoreline of Brice Prairie, and one inside the barrier island at the east end of the channel (see map below). Haven't heard from others about Sunday's survey effort yet. Fairly strong wind today, well onshore, so not much risk for further distribution. The winds have been ping-ponging the floating nearshore vegetation mats around, so it actually makes it easier to inspect the same material from different angles. I think boat wakes in the Brice Prairie channel continue to free up occasional overlooked plants, but there is ample time to locate and retrieve them before they get broadcast out of the channel, especially with onshore winds. The plants still look very healthy, apparently not bothered at all by the low temperatures yet. A summary, chronology and some photos of the infestation can be found on the Lake Onalaska Protection and Rehabilitation District website: http://www.lakeonalaska.org/invasive_species.html Reminder: I you have used your watercraft to harvest lettuce, be sure to clean and inspect it!!! I cleaned my boat thoroughly today because I will be going out of the infested area and found 1 plant down in the bilge.
