Water Lettuce on Lake Onalaska: Monday Date: 10/19/2015 10:05 PM From: Fritz To: Participating Natural Resource Agencies and Volunteers Mike Schultz found 7 more plants this afternoon, surveying from his dock (upper end of Brice Prairie channel) to the tubes. All were single plants. He notes it is difficult to spot them now with the leaves on the surface of the channel. I surveyed from the Fred Funk landing to the FWS overlook this morning, finding 3 water lettuce plants right at the wooden dock at the Fred Funk landing. Those plants were quite large and healthy. Substantial new floating mats of celery are accumulating on the exposed Brice Prairie shore from the last few days' south winds. Those mats will likely entrap/bury any remaining plants if they are still there, so at least they should not escape to other parts of the lake. If we keep surveying the Brice Prairie channel I think we can find any remaining stragglers before they can get out. Important Update from Monday, October 19 ----------------------------------------------------------- More Plants Found On French Island: Tim Gerber found two plants while kayaking the shallow water area just east of the boat landing by the sailing club at Nelson Park, stuck in the duck weed/coontail floating masses of plants. Tim also found two more near the Fred Funk landing on Brice Prairie on Monday. --Fritz
