Water Lettuce on Lake Onalaska: Friday Oct 23 Date: 10/24/2015 07:22 AM From: Fritz To: Participating Natural Resource Agencies and Volunteers Additional survey effort from Thursday October 22: Scott Caven searched along Fisherman's Road on French Island and along the Onalaska spillway. He also kayaked in front of the Clearwater Cabins on Brice Prairie, zig-zagging back and forth, and around Broken Gun Island in the afternoon, avoiding times when waterfowl were using the area. Friday October 23 reports to date: Ben Lachecki was out between his house (on Z) and Schafers and agrees it was not the best viewing conditions. He did not find any plants. I surveyed the lower Brice Prairie channel Friday morning (map attached). Only found 2 plants - both at the wooden dock at the Fred Funk landing. Survey conditions were not good - dim light from the dense clouds and lots of new leaves on top of the floating veg mats obscuring things. Water level was higher along the north shore Friday - might shake some hidden plants loose. There were some large rafts of waterfowl out by Broken Gun Island again, so I chose not to disturb them to have a look along Z. Doubt there is anything detectable there anyway amongst the mats of celery. Strong NW winds this afternoon (gusts above 25) so I will get out to check the lower Brice Prairie channel again this morning - if plants exit the channel, these winds could distribute them across the lake and downstream. More survey effort welcome! --Fritz Event summary and chronology on Lake District website: http://www.lakeonalaska.org/invasive_species.html Attachments: Fri_am.jpg 20.2 KB
